世界有数の素材科学企業であるダウ（NYSE: DOW、本社：米国ミシガン州、会長兼CEO：ジム・フィッタリング）と、高度なプラスチックリサイクルソリューションの世界的パイオニア企業であるミュラテクノロジーは、7月２１日、世界のプラスチック廃棄物問題の解決に向けたパートナーシップの次の取り組みとして、米国と欧州に全体で年間60万トンとなる、世界規模の12万トンクラスのアドバンスドリサイクル施設を複数建設することを発表しました。
ダウは、ミュラが製造する循環型原料の主要需要家として、このパートナーシップにおいて重要な役割を担います。この循環型原料は、現在埋め立てまたは焼却されているプラスチック廃棄物から得られるもので、化石由来原料への依存度を減らします。ダウは、グローバルブランドオーナーから旺盛な需要がある、新しいバージングレードのプラスチック開発のためのリサイクルプラスチック原料を生産できるようになります。ダウとミュラが協力することで、世界のサプライチェーンにおけるプラスチックの再循環を実現し、プラスチックのサーキュラーエコノミーを推進し、プラスチック廃棄物の価値を高めることに貢献します。

今回の発表は、ミュラの革新的なHydroPRS™（熱水プラスチックリサイクルソリューション）アドバンスドリサイクルプロセスの急速なスケールアップにおける重要なマイルストーンとなります。この技術は、これまで「リサイクル不可能」とされてきた軟質プラスチックや多層構造プラスチックを含む、あらゆる形態のプラスチックをリサイクルすることができる先進的なリサイクルプロセスです。大規模に展開されれば、毎年何百万トンものプラスチックと二酸化炭素が環境に流出するのを防ぎ、持続可能で循環型のプラスチック経済のための材料を作り出すことができます。それは、ダウが素材科学の専門技術を活用することで、ミュラとともに目指すゴールでもあります。

- ヴァロレジェン社（Valoregen）管理による、フランスで唯一最大のシングルハイブリッドリサイクル工場の建設への投資により、ダウはPCR（ポストコンシューマーリサイクル樹脂）供給源を確保。
- ネクサス・サーキュラー社（Nexus Circular）との間で、米国テキサス州ダラスにおいてネクサス・サーキュラー社およびレイノルズ・コンシューマー・プロダクツ社（Reynolds Consumer Products）との協力のもと、Hefty🄬Energybag🄬プロジェクトを発展させ、これまでリサイクルされていなかったプラスチックの循環型エコシステムを構築するための意向書を締結。
熱水技術により、プラスチック問題を解決する規模の経済を提供
ミュラ独自の熱水リサイクルプロセスであるHydroPRS™は、超臨界蒸気（圧力と温度が上昇した水）の形で水を使用してプラスチックを分解するものです。蒸気が分子ハサミのように作用し、プラスチック中の長鎖炭化水素結合を切断して、プラスチックの元である貴重な化学品や油をわずか25分で生成します。
この油は、元の化石製品に相当するもので、同じ材料を何度でも処理できるため、新しいバージングレードのプラスチックを生産するために使用され、プラスチック廃棄物の真のサーキュラーエコノミーが実現されます。重要なのは、従来のリサイクルプロセスとは異なり、その製品が食品接触包装への適性が期待できることです。
ミュラの革新的なプロセスは、フィルム、ポット、器、トレイなど、現在焼却や埋立地に送られることの多い「リサイクル不可能」とされる廃棄物を含む、あらゆる種類のプラスチック廃棄物をリサイクルすることができます。このプロセスは、従来のリサイクル方法や、ダウのリサイクル戦略にとって重要なメカニカルリサイクル（プラスチック廃棄物を破砕して別のプラスチック製品に再形成する方法）など、プラスチックの削減と再利用を目指す幅広い取り組みと連動できるよう設計されています。
超臨界蒸気の使用は、この技術が本質的に拡張可能であることを意味します。廃棄物を外側から加熱する他の方法とは異なり、蒸気は内側からエネルギーを与えるので、プラスチック廃棄物を効率的に変換し、そのプロセスを規模に関係なく維持することを可能にします。
ダウは、米国に拠点を置く多国籍エンジニアリングサービス企業であるKBR社や、世界的なコンサルティングエンジニアリング企業であるウッド社（Wood）など、他の大手グローバル企業とともに、ミュラの技術の世界展開を加速させるパートナーとして参加しています。た、この技術は、プラスチック廃棄物問題に取り組む環境団体オーシャン・ジェネレーション（Ocean Generation）からも支援を受けています。
