ダウとミュラテクノロジー、ドイツ・ベーレンのダウ拠点に 欧州最大のアドバンスドリサイクル施設の設置を計画

世界有数の素材科学企業であるダウ（NYSE: DOW、本社：米国ミシガン州、会長兼CEO：ジム・フィッタリング）と高度なプラスチックリサイクルソリューションの世界的パイオニアであるミュラテクノロジーは9月14日、世界のプラスチック廃棄物問題の解決とサーキュラーエコノミー（循環型経済）の推進の支援に向けた継続的な協力関係において、次の段階となる取り組みを発表しました。ミュラは、ダウのドイツ・ベーレンの拠点において新たな設備を設置する計画です。これは、プラスチックのアドバンスドリサイクルを急速に拡大するための、これまでで最大の取り組みの一環として米国と欧州における一連の計画の最新の発表であり、ダウの事業所を拠点とする最初の施設となる予定です。このプロジェクトは、2023年末までに最終的な投資判断がなされる予定です。
ミュラの新しいベーレン施設は2025年までに操業開始予定であり、フル稼働時には年間約12万トンのアドバンスドリサイクル能力を提供することになります。この施設と、欧州と米国で建設予定の他の施設を合わせると、2030年までに60万トンのアドバンスドリサイクル能力が追加される見込みであり、ダウはポリエチレン生産のための循環型原料の世界最大の消費者と位置付けることになります。
ダウの原料およびコモディティ事業のバイスプレジデントであるイサム・ショメリ（Isam Shomaly）は、次のように述べています。「ダウとミュラのコラボレーションの継続は、循環型の原料を確保し、画期的なアドバンスドリサイクル技術の発展を支援するために戦略的な設備増強に取り組むダウによる一例となります」

この新しい施設計画は、2021年に初めて発表されたダウとミュラの継続的なパートナーシップを基盤にしています。ミュラのHydroPRS™プロセスを使用した世界初のプラントは、英国ティーサイドにおいて2023年に年間2万トンの生産ラインによる稼働する予定です。ドイツ・ベーレンの施設は、ダウの製造施設と併設される予定であり、プラスチック廃棄物の処理能力を大幅に拡大し、完全循環型原料の供給を大幅に増加させる見込みです。現在、焼却や埋め立て処分されているプラスチック廃棄物から得られるこの循環型原料は、化石由来のバージン原料への依存を減らす見込みであり、特に食品や医療用途などハイエンドで環境意識が高い市場向けに、グローバルブランドから高い需要があるリサイクルプラスチックをダウが供給できるようになることが見込まれます。
ダウは、リサイクル施設の増設に伴うコストの大幅な削減を可能とする、共同立地の利点の活用を目指しています。また、ミュラの施設をダウの拠点に併設することで、引き取りの輸送を最小限に抑え、アドバンスドリサイクルプロセスから発生するガスをプラスチックに戻すことができるため、副産物を無駄にすることなく、二酸化炭素排出量を削減することが期待されます。

ミュラのHydroPRS™アドバンスドリサイクルプロセスは、超臨界蒸気（圧力と温度が上昇した水）を使用して、これまで「リサイクル不可能」とされてきた軟プラスチックや多層プラスチックを含むほとんどの形態のプラスチックを、元の油や化学品に変換する独自のプロセスです。このプロセスを利用して、食品包装に適したバージン材と同等の新しいプラスチック製品を作ることが可能になります。
ミュラのプロセスでは、同じ材料を繰り返しリサイクルすることができます。つまり、使い捨てのプラスチックを排除し、埋め立てや焼却処分を防ぐことが可能になります。また、アドバンスドリサイクルプロセスにより、焼却処分と比べてリサイクルされるプラスチック1トンあたり約1.5トンの二酸化炭素が削減されるため、化石由来の原料への依存を軽減することが期待されます。
*アドバンスドリサイクルは、廃棄プラスチックを原料に戻すケミカルリサイクルの意であり、ダウは従来にない革新的なケミカルリサイクル技術としてこれをアドバンスドリサイクルと呼んでいます。
